ATLANTA — Georgia’s only President Jimmy Carter has died today at the age of 100 years after spending more than a year in hospice care. The former peanut farmer served one term after narrowly defeating President Gerald Ford in 1976 largely on the leftover outrage from the Watergate Scandal of the Nixon Administration.
As President, Carter’s greatest accomplishment was brokering the peace agreement between Egypt and Israel, a pact that has held to this day. However, he will also be remembered for having no answers to an OPEC oil embargo that sent gas prices skyrocketing, massive inflation, high levels of unemployment and high mortgage interest rates.
Upon leaving office, Jimmy Carter returned to Plains, Georgia where he devoted his life to charitable ventures, most notably “Habitat for Humanity” where he assisted in the construction of numerous houses for those in need. In addition, as a devout Christian, he taught Sunday School well into his 90’s.
